Granite Bullnose Steps are dense natural granite step units with a rounded front edge. The bullnose profile gives the step a smoother and more finished appearance than a square front edge, making it suitable for garden steps, patio transitions, entrance steps and raised outdoor areas where the front edge remains visible. Granite is one of the hardest natural stones used in external paving and landscaping. It is commonly chosen for projects where strength, durability, frost resistance and long service life are more important than a soft rustic appearance. The rounded bullnose edge also helps create a safer and more refined step detail for everyday outdoor use. It works particularly well with granite paving, granite setts, edging, kerbs and modern hard landscaping designs.

Granite steps are commonly supplied in practical outdoor formats such as 900 x 400 x 40 mm, 1000 x 350 x 50 mm and 1200 x 400 x 50 mm. These sizes are widely used for UK garden steps, entrances, patio edges and outdoor level changes. A 400 mm depth provides a comfortable tread size for many garden and patio applications, while the 900 mm or 1200 mm length gives a strong visual line across the step front. Thicker granite step units may also be used where a more structural or heavy-duty appearance is required. As granite is a natural stone product, small dimensional tolerances may occur. Installers should allow for normal jointing, bedding and setting-out adjustment during installation.

Granite steps are not automatically slippery, but the slip resistance depends heavily on the surface finish. Polished or very smooth granite is not suitable for external steps because it can become slippery in wet conditions. For outdoor use in the UK, a flamed or textured finish is strongly recommended. A flamed granite surface has a rougher texture, giving better grip underfoot when the step is exposed to rain, frost and normal garden moisture. For entrances, garden steps and high-traffic areas, flamed granite with a bullnose front edge is usually the most practical choice because it combines durability, grip and a clean finished appearance.

Granite steps should be installed on a strong, stable and properly prepared base. They should not be laid directly onto soil, grass, loose aggregate or unsupported ground. A compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base or concrete base is normally required, depending on the project design and site conditions. Each granite step should be fully supported on a suitable mortar bed or structural bedding layer. Spot bedding is not recommended because it can leave voids beneath the stone, increasing the risk of movement, rocking or cracking under load. A slight forward fall should be built into the installation so rainwater can drain away from the step surface. For thinner granite treads or sawn-backed units, a suitable priming slurry may be required to improve bond strength between the stone and mortar bed.

Sandstone Bullnose Steps are natural Indian sandstone step units with one long front edge shaped into a rounded bullnose profile. This rounded edge gives the step a softer, more traditional and more finished appearance than a sharp square edge. They are commonly used where the front of the step is visible, such as raised patios, garden entrances, door thresholds, terrace steps and outdoor level changes. Compared with using a standard paving slab as a step, a proper bullnose step gives a more professional visible edge. Because they are made from real Indian sandstone paving material, each piece may show natural colour variation, mineral markings, bedding lines and surface character. These are normal features of sandstone rather than faults.

Sandstone bullnose steps can be used for garden steps, raised patio edges, door thresholds, terrace entrances, pathway transitions and changes in garden level. They are especially useful where a neat visible front edge is required. They are often fitted between a house and patio, between a patio and lawn, around raised seating areas, or as part of a traditional garden entrance. The rounded edge helps the step look more complete and intentional than a standard flat slab. Sandstone bullnose steps can be matched with similar sandstone paving slabs, or used as a natural contrast beside porcelain paving, gravel, brickwork, granite setts or garden walling. Colour and finish should be considered together with the surrounding materials before installation.

Sandstone bullnose steps are commonly supplied in a 900 x 400 x 40 mm format. The 900 mm length gives a practical step width for garden and patio use, while the 400 mm depth provides a comfortable tread size for many outdoor step and threshold applications. The 40 mm nominal thickness gives the step a more substantial appearance than many standard paving slabs. This matters because steps are more visible than flat patio areas, and the front edge needs to look solid and properly finished. As with most natural stone products, small dimensional tolerances may occur. Sandstone is cut and finished from natural material, so installers should allow for normal variation during setting out, bedding and jointing.

Sealing sandstone bullnose steps is optional, not compulsory. A suitable breathable natural stone sealer can help reduce early staining and make the surface easier to clean during the first period after installation. However, sealing should not be treated as a permanent solution. On outdoor sandstone, the visible benefit of a sealer gradually reduces because of rain, sunlight, foot traffic, cleaning and normal weathering. Sealing cannot stop all colour change, algae growth or surface weathering. Any sealer should be tested on a small area first, because it may slightly deepen or change the appearance of the stone, especially when the sandstone becomes wet.
